Old Dunleary holds a special place in the hearts of all those who have grown up here or spent time enjoying our town’s special character, life and history.
The “You Know You’re From Dún Laoghaire When” infographic pays homage to Dún Laoghaire Town, sharing special memories about the cultural institutions of Dún Laoghaire Town, which is now rapidly evolving into a vibrant cultural and business hub.
Reminiscing special memories – All memories come with a good story, whether it be deciding “between the Miami or the Ritz for your first date” or remembering “Ann’s Hot Bread Shop having the best coffee in town, where breakfast was only £1.99”, Dún Laoghaire Town has a special place in the hearts of people who have experienced its unique charm and character.

Special Memories shared with us include –
- You learned to swim in the freezing waters of the Dún Laoghaire Baths. – They’re currently being redeveloped and are due to open to hardy swimmers again in early 2019.
- To be a real full Irish, it has to include Hick’s sausages. – Dún Laoghaire is home to many long established independent family- owned retailers, serving generations of local families including Hick’s (est. 1927), Tierney’s Gifts (est. 1951), McManus Jewellers (est. 1928), and Burnett’s Pharmacy (est. 1890).
- You went to see the remains of the Queen Victoria Fountain after its destruction in 1981. – Our town is full of fascinating stories and has over 28 historic points of interest.
- You were there in 1964 when the Christmas lights were turned on for the first time. – This year sees the biggest display yet of Christmas lights in our town, right down to York Road.
- Where to Eat and Drink in Dún Laoghaire – The Purty Kitchen was your Friday night haunt. – Dún Laoghaire is home to some of the oldest pubs in south Dublin. Founded in 1728, the Purty Kitchen is the oldest pub in the area. McLoughlin’s Bar harks back to 1902, and O’Loughlin’s Pub was established in 1929.
- You couldn’t choose between the Miami or the Ritz Cafe for your first date. – Established in 1914 and 1955 respectively, these long- standing family-run cafés continue to welcome new generations of lovebirds.
- You remember when Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre was the coolest place to hang out on the south side when it opened in 1976. – The dlr LexIcon is now the biggest draw to our town attracting over 500,000 visitors in 2017. It is Failte Ireland’s fifth most popular free attraction nationally.
- You remember Ann’s Hot Bread Shop having the best coffee in town, where breakfast was only £1.99. – There are now over 25 speciality coffee shops trading in Dún Laoghaire town.
- You first learned how to launch a fishing rod with your dad on Dún Laoghaire Pier. – Fishing enthusiasts share the harbour with 1.2 million people who walk Dún Laoghaire Pier each year.
- Bagatelle’s “Summer in Dublin” brings you right back to the top deck of the 46A bus. – Dún Laoghaire has the best public transport linkages in the Dublin area, with over 12 bus routes and 200 Darts passing through our town every day.
