Today was the launch of the Historic Dún Laoghaire Walking Tour map In Hicks butcher on Lower Georges Street. A poignant location to launch this historical map; Opened in 1927 Hick’s has seen Dún Laoghaire grow and change over many decades, Hick’s themselves have changed hands three times over the years, but those hands have always remained within the family; a true stalwart at the Heart of our Joycean District. Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Ossian Smyth joined us for the launch along with Nigel and Rosaleen Hick.
Dún Laoghaire has a wealth of history and culture. Did you know Dún Laoghaire was home to the world’s first suburban railway, the world’s first purpose-built yacht club, and the world’s largest asylum harbor.
The map connects 28 historic locations around Dún Laoghaire including the likes of The RMS Leinster’s Memorial Anchor, James Joyce Tower & Museum and Burnett’s Pharmacy established in 1890. The map has beautifully laid out directory at the back with interesting background information about all the locations. It’s worth the read. Pick it up and read it, you never know you may find out something new.
For those of you wanting to follow the route on their mobile devices; there is a QR code in the bottom right hand corner which if scanned will bring users to a pre-laid out google maps with all the historical locations and walking routes mapped out.
