Ironman 70.3 Triahlon Comes to Town
An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr Tom Murphy was on hand last Sunday morning at Sandycove beach to fire the starting hooter in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon. In a spectacular seaside start on a beautiful morning 2,000 athletes from 38 countries, cheered on by over 1,000 spectators, began their 1.2 mile swim in Dún Laoghaire around Scotsmans Bay, followed by a 56-mile cycle into Dublin City and out as far as Maynooth and then run on a loop in the Phoenix Park for 13.1 miles.
Triathlete David McNamee from the UK won in the mens category – coming in with a time of 3 hours 48 minutes and 14 seconds while Sarah Lewis also from the UK won the womens category in 4 hours, 23 minutes and eleven seconds.
This is the third year in a row that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown has been selected as the starting point for this prestigious international sporting event.
