May sees Dún Laoghaire bustling with community and cultural events. The month kicks off with the Dún Laoghaire Tidy Towns Bumper Table Quiz on May 8th aiming to raise funds to support their work in our town. The summer sailing season begins with about 30 cruisers launched by local yacht clubs. A new E-Planning website has been launched by the County Council to simplify planning applications. DLR LEO is organising a free Trading Online Voucher Webinar on May 13th to assist small businesses get online. The cruise ship season is also underway with 80 scheduled visits to our harbour.

Local community efforts were celebrated through the Community and Volunteer Awards while artistic talents are to the fore at National Drawing Day events on May 18th.  Social inclusion is in focus with the Festival of Inclusion running from May 15th-26th. Finally, the DLR First Frames Scheme continues to support emerging filmmakers, showcasing local and international talent.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Yacht Clubs – Start of Summer Sailing Season

Dun Laoghaire Harbour hosted the beginning of the 2024 summer sailing season on Dublin Bay. The National Yacht Club and the adjacent Royal St. George YC each utilized mobile cranes to launch about 30 sailing cruisers, while the DMYC on the West Pier conducted a similar operation. These vessels had been stored on land at the club facilities over the winter.

DLR CoCo Launched a New Online Portal – E-Planning website

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council introduced a new online planning application service accessible through the Local Government National E-Planning website. This new digital platform simplifies the process, allowing citizens to submit and track their planning applications anytime from home or office. The service is designed to be user-friendly, and a workshop for agents will be held soon to explain the system’s functionality.

DLR LEO – Trading Online Voucher Webinar

Dlr LEO is organising a Trading online voucher webinar on 13th May, completely free of charge. This initiative is designed to help small businesses that trade online to boost their sales and reach new markets.

The Cruise Season in Dún Laoghaire Has Started

The Viking Venus cruise liner recently docked at Dun Laoghaire Harbour, signaling the start of the 2024 cruise season that spans from April to October. This season is set to feature 80 cruise liner visits to Dun Laoghaire.

Dún Laoghaire RATHDOWN Community and Volunteer Awards

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council was pleased to host the dlr Community and Volunteer Awards event. This ceremony gathered community groups and volunteers, offering the Council an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the numerous individuals and projects throughout the county that contribute to its vibrant community.

ArtNet DLR – National Drawing Day With Elizabeth Shaw

National Drawing Day, an annual event celebrating drawing and creativity, is co-hosted by the National Gallery of Ireland. Join ArtNetdlr and artist Elizabeth Shaw for a casual drawing session on Saturday, May 18th at 12:30 PM at Walters in Dun Laoghaire. Elizabeth will lead a relaxed afternoon where both complete beginners and experienced artists are welcome to drop in, enjoy drawing, and come and go as they please.

DLR CoCo – Festival of Inclusion 2024

The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (dlr) County Council is excited to host the annual dlr Festival of Inclusion from May 15th to 26th. This festival aims to spotlight and celebrate social inclusion initiatives, encouraging everyone to actively participate and engage in community activities.

DLR CoCo – Supporting Emerging Film Talent

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is pleased to continue the dlr First Frames Scheme for 2024/25, supporting emerging filmmakers in creating unique short films in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Working with the Institute of Art, Design & Technology’s National Film School, the program has helped produce a variety of films, with many achieving recognition and awards at festivals locally and internationally.

Martello Boules in People’s Park

Boules is a social and fun game providing a great opportunity for socialising and staying active. In April DLR Sports Partnership ran a Come & Try Boules session with 15 older adults.  The experienced members of the club walked the eager new participants through the rules of the game, and they were able to jump right in and start playing. The groups then had a club member play with them and learnt some new skills and tricks. The group then finished off the morning with a well-earned tea / coffee and good conversation in the People’s Park Café.
