Sun shines on 1,500 participants in the dlr Bay 10k road race
The 7th annual dlr Bay 10k provided runners with a fantastic experience today along a coastal route in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown this August Bank Holiday Monday. Over 1,500 runners took part in the 10k and Family 1.5k Fun Run with another thousand cheering spectators lining the routes to cheer the runners on. The weather conditions were superb for running with blue skies for the entire morning.
You could feel the big race atmosphere at the start and finish line areas along the scenic promenade at Newtownsmith Green in Dún Laoghaire town. The event attracted some high quality runners from all over the country, providing the spectators with lots of excitement as they pushed hard competing all the way to the finish. Spectators were aided with giant screens to view the runners approaching the finish line
Coming first across the line in the Men’s category was John Coughlan (Metro St.Bridgets AC), son of former Irish champion Eamon Coughlan, in a super time of 30.50, followed by Freddy Keron Stukk and Colm Turner. Michelle Cox (Newbridge AC) was first home in the Women’s category in 39.07, followed very closely by Aoife O’Leary and Zoe Quinn.
Speaking at the event An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Cllr Tom Murphy, who pulled the trigger on the start gun commented “It was fantastic to see so many different types of runners taking part in the race. It’s been another hugely successful year for the dlr Bay 10k event, now in its 7th year and demonstrates the County Councils commitment to bringing accessible and participatory sporting events to local people and those further afield.”
The dlr Bay 10k charity partner for the event this year was the Irish Cancer Society.
